Humanizing High Density—People, Nature & the Urban Realm
  
  We’re excited to be in Singapore for the CTBUH 2023 International Conference, “Humanizing High Density—People, Nature & the Urban Realm,” which commenced on Monday, 16 October, with palpable energy and enthusiasm. Over 250 delegates participated in a dozen themed workshops to discuss, deliberate, and determine key criteria in the advancement of tall buildings. These invigorating dialogues were followed by an opening networking reception at CapitaSpring, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, with an eight-story mid-height skygarden and roof terrace, affording extraordinary views of the Singapore skyline and surrounding region.    Daily Highlights Workshops Architectural DesignPresentations from four speakers were given in the Architectural Design workshop to explore the topic of finding a balance between nature, technology, humanity and high density. Viviana Muscettola, Director, Zaha Hadid Architects and Ariane Dienstag, founder, Ariane Dienstag sas, moderated an invigorating discussion on ideas surrounding the aspects of performance and quality to bridge advanced technologies of architectural design and balancing a more humanized high density.  Smart Homes to Smart CitiesExploring the power of Smart Cities the presenters Mark Zwerner, Vice President Global Strategic Partnerships ABB Smart Buildings Division; Emre Evinc, Director, Head of ioT Business Europe, Samsung Electronics Europe; and Aik Hock Ng, Director, Cities and Public Services, Dassault Systemes gave presentations to the attendees. Participants got a greater understanding on how AI, the internet of things (ioT) and data analytics can address the pressing challenges faced by urban areas today.  Construction Assembly Workshop—Carbon in ConstructionModerated by David Scott, Engineering Director, Laing O’Rourke, the workshop focused on how carbon in construction is an integral consideration in the building life cycle and the debates that surround how you review and calculate its impact. Participants listened to presentations from four speakers to further understand the options for automation, prefabrication as well as labor allocation, bidding and utilizing the supply chain.  Urban Integrations and ImpactFocusing on mastering core principles of urban design and advancing these in the real-world context, speakers including James Parakh, urban design manager, City of Toronto Planning Department and Dominic Bettison, director, WilkinsonEyre explored the qualities for human scale and its relationship to tall buildings. Through provocative discussions the question was asked: just how important is the human scale to successful tall building design and urban design, and what impacts do the spaces in-between tall buildings have?
