(Construction of the new Hilton hotel officially launched )
Today, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol marked the official launch of construction of the new Hilton hotel. At a ceremony attended by Schiphol Group Vice President & CCO Maarten de Groof, Schiphol Real Estate Director Andre van den Berg, Hilton Worldwide Area General Manager for the Benelux Marcus-Milan Arandelovic, and Hilton Worldwide Area Vice President for Western and Southern Europe Jean Faivre, one of the 840 piles was driven into the ground.
Schiphol Group Executive Vice President & CCO Maarten de Groof: “The new hotel will replace the existing Hilton hotel and is expected to open for business mid 2015. This project will contribute to a more dynamic business community at Schiphol and fits in with our strategy for making this a premier business location. The hotel will strengthen Schiphol Mainport’s position as an international hub”.
Jean Favire, Area Vice President Operations Western & Southern Europe, Hilton Worldwide, commented: “The Hilton Amsterdam Schiphol Airport serves a major international hub and we are delighted to be able to offer a uniquely new hotel experience. The opening of the Hilton San Francisco Airport in 1959 marked the launch of the first airport hotel concept. With a portfolio of 337 airport hotels across the globe, we are the world’s largest airport hotel operator.”
The new hotel is a development and investment project of the Schiphol Hotel Property Company (a wholly owned subsidiary of Schiphol Real Estate) and will be managed by Hilton Worldwide. The new Hilton hotel will be given pride of place beside the terminal access road, opposite the existing Hilton hotel, which will remain in use until the new hotel is completed.
The new Hilton hotel will have 433 guest rooms, 23 conference rooms, a ballroom accommodating 600, a restaurant and bar, executive lounges, and spa and gym facilities. A covered walkway will connect the hotel directly to the airport terminal.
The cube-shaped building was designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo and will be defined by rounded corners, diamond-shaped windows and diagonal lines. A large atrium with a 35-metre high glass roof will form the heart of the hotel and conference centre. The interior, designed by the London-based Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), will feature a contemporary, innovative and vibrant Dutch style, marked by strong, bold contours and a natural, harmonious colour scheme.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Schiphol Group, Schiphol Real Estate develops, manages, operates and invests in commercial real estate, primarily at and around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
