With its ESG taxonomy, the European Union incorporates key environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues to all sectors of the economy. The real estate industry is particularly affected. To date, however, a cohesive overview has been lacking and there is an ongoing need for a bundled analysis of the complex sectors in the industry. Published recenty, the work “ESG in der Immobilienwirtschaft. Praxishandbuch für den gesamten Immobilien- und Investitionszyklus“ (“ESG and the Real Estate Industry. Practical Handbook for the Entire Real Estate and Investment Cycle”) closes this gap in an impressive manner. The editors Thomas Veith, Christiane Conrads (PwC), and Professor Dr. Florian Hackelberg (HAWK Holzminden) have assembled an outstanding collection of more than 40 renowned authors from corporate practice, consulting, and academia to cover all of the key ESG aspects of the industry.
Commencing with the political and (currently existing) regulatory requirements, the handbook covers ESG in the areas of management, investment, financing, valuation of real estate, and sustainable urban development. Further detail is provided as to market trends and tax regulations, ESG in urban and project development and real estate insurance. Roger Baumann, COO & Head Product Development Global Real Estate of Zurich Insurance Group, Jens Böhnlein, Global Head of Asset Management at Commerz Real, and Martin Brühl, member of the management board of Union Investment Real Estate, contribute the ESG strategies currently implemented at their companies and the resulting practice. The handbook thus provides decision-makers and other stakeholders with tangible information and support for their own strategic positioning in this field of action.
“We are very keen to see the internalization of social and ecological consequential costs become standard in the real estate industry in the short term,” comments co-editor Thomas Veith, Partner and Head of Real Assets at PwC.
Co-editor Christiane Conrads, Head of the EMEA Real Estate ESG Group at PwC, adds, “The challenge now for the real estate industry is to address the market failures that still exist today through effective ESG strategies.”
“The challenges associated with implementing ESG criteria still raise many questions in the real estate industry. Our handbook sets the framework for action and provides answers,” explains co-editor Florian Hackelberg, Professor of Real Estate Economics and Management at HAWK Holzminden.
