On behalf of the shareholders of “Battersea Power Station”, Battersea Power Station Development Company announces that Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners, two of the world’s most innovative and renowned architectural practices have been chosen to design Phase 3 at Battersea Power Station. This will be architect Frank Gehry’s first building in London.
Phase 3 will be one of the most exciting areas of the Battersea Power Station development, otherwise known as the High Street. Being a retail pedestrian street it is the gateway to the entire development and the new Northern Line extension. Phase 3 will comprise two residential development zones located either side of the High Street. Both architectural practices are collaborating on the High Street; Gehry Partners is designing the residential buildings to the east of the High Street, with Foster + Partners designing the residential buildings to the west. In total, Phase 3 will comprise 1200 residential units, a 200 room hotel overlooking both the town square and the Power Station, 350,000 sq. ft. of retail and restaurant space, a 15,000 sq. ft. library and further leisure space.
Frank Gehry, founder of Gehry Partners commented;
“Gehry Partners is honored to have this wonderful opportunity to collaborate with our respected colleagues Foster + Partners on this seriously important project for the city of London. Our goal is to help create a neighborhood and a place for people to live that respects the iconic Battersea Power Station while connecting it into the broader fabric of the city. We hope to create a design that is uniquely London, that respects and celebrates the historical vernacular of the city.”
Grant Brooker, Design Director, Foster + Partners commented;
“We moved our own office to Wandsworth almost twenty five years ago – the Borough is very important to us, so we were absolutely delighted to be chosen to be part of this inspiring regeneration project for the Battersea Power Station redevelopment. It has a vision which will transform this area and create a vibrant new district for South London that we can all be proud of. Along with our colleagues at Gehry Partners, we are joining a great team of designers and we will work closely with them to create a new high street and our part of this exciting new community.”
Rob Tincknell, Chief Executive Officer for Battersea Power Station Development Company commented:
“We are thrilled to have two such well regarded architectural practices join the team and for Battersea Power Station to be the home to Gehry’s first building in London. This clearly demonstrates both the quality and the design aspirations which our shareholders are determined to achieve, as well as the extraordinary design solutions which the site deserves. We are very confident that Phase 3 will be something groundbreaking and wonderful in London.”
