Carillion selected as preferred bidder for Phase One of “Battersea Power Station” development

On behalf of the Battersea Power Station shareholders, Battersea Power Station Development Company is pleased to confirm the appointment of Carillion, the leading British integrated construction and support services company, as the preferred bidder for Circus West, the first phase of the 39-acre scheme.
 
Situated to the west of the Power Station, Circus West at Battersea Power Station will comprise over 866 one, two and three bedroom apartments, townhouses and penthouses as well as a range of offices, shops, community and cultural spaces designed by Ian Simpson Architects and de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM).
 
The contract could ultimately be worth as much as £400m, and reflects the commitment of the Battersea Power Station shareholders to the redevelopment of the site. Carillion expects to create up to 1,400 jobs on-site, at the peak of phase 1 construction.
 
Carillion is one of the UK’s largest construction companies, employing around 40,000 people and with annual revenues of £4.4bn in 2012. Major developments it has worked on in the recent past include the £335m Royal Liverpool Hospital Project, Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport and Crossrail.
 
Preparatory work on Phase One has already begun with main construction works expected to commence in the summer of 2013 and scheduled for completion in 2016. This will coincide with the start of the renovation of the Grade II* listed Power Station itself, the largest brick building in Europe and one of the most significant surviving examples of Art Deco architecture. This will involve the rebuilding of the iconic towers which will remain the centrepiece of the site in the new development.
 
Commenting on the appointment, the Chief Executive of Battersea Power Station Development Company Rob Tincknell, said: “Today’s announcement of Carillion’s appointment is further demonstration of our shareholders’ commitment to the scheme and a major step towards the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station. Carillion is a leading UK-based contractor, and we are confident that they have the experience and expertise to undertake the work required.  The size of the contract makes this one of the largest in London and we are delighted that our shareholders have chosen award it to a British firm.”
 
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “This is a hugely important step forward in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station and it paves the way for the creation of thousands of new jobs and homes.
 
“This iconic London landmark has lain dormant for too long and it’s fantastic news that it will soon be home to a hive of activity that boosts the economy in the capital and beyond.
 
“I’m delighted that we now have one of the UK’s leading firms on board to help deliver what is without doubt one of London’s most important construction projects in decades.”
 
Residents of Circus West will have access to a range of amenities and services including art galleries, a Power Station Design shop, independent coffee shops, a boutique theatre, creative business studios and a gym.  The site will also provide large areas of public open space including a new six acre riverside park that will provide direct access to Battersea Park and Chelsea via a new riverside pathway adjoining the existing River Thames Walk.
 
In total the redevelopment of the site will generate 15,000 new jobs and 3,500 new homes. Battersea Power Station will be served by a new underground station and river bus services, making it one of the most accessible new destinations for people to live, work, socialise and spend their leisure time.
